Dal [[1920]] al [[1922]] fu allenatore della Reggiana e poi ancora nel [[1923/24]] e [[1925/26]]. Nel frattempo guidò il Torino nel [[1922/23]], nel [[1924/25]] e più tardi nel [[1929/30]]. Dal [[1926]] al [[1929]] sedette sulla panchina del Prato e nel [[1930/31]] su quella dell'Alessandria. [[Palmieri Alfredo|Alfredo Palmieri]] lo chiamò alla guida della Lazio nel campionato [[1932/33]] in sostituzione di [[Barbuy Amilcar|Barbuy]]. Il [[<del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">24</del> aprile]] [[1934]], dopo una sconfitta patita in casa con la [[<del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Juventus FC|</del>Juventus]] (0-2), il nuovo presidente [[Gualdi Eugenio|Eugenio Gualdi]] lo esonerò e ingaggiò il tecnico [[Alt Walter|Alt]]. Sturmer passò alla guida del Livorno dal [[1934]] al [[1936]] e poi tornò all'Alessandria nel campionato [[1936/37]]. Il campionato [[1938/39]] lo vide alla guida delle squadre giovanili della Juventus e quello successivo sulla panchina della Cremonese. Chiuse la carriera nell'Hellas Verona nel [[1942/43]]. Ebbe grandi capacità nell'insegnare il calcio ai giovani come dimostrano la creazione di una formidabile squadra giovanile del Torino chiamata "Balon Boys" e, ancor più, l'eccezionale squadra dei "pulcini", il nome lo inventò lui stesso, della Lazio che vinse importanti tornei internazionali e nazionali e costrinse al pareggio, con ragazzi di 12-13 anni, la formidabile squadra giovanile del Wacker Vienna in una partita al Prater, di fronte ad uno stadio stracolmo, prima dell'incontro internazionale Austria-Belgio dell'[[11 giugno]] [[1933]].
